Henrietta Simson, born 1971 in Crawley. Lives and works in London. Studied MA Painting at Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and currently studying there for a practice-related PhD.
Solo exhibitions include: No Guts, No Glory, Volta, New York, USA, 2010; Over the Frontier, Man & Eve, London, 2008; Lost Narratives, Slade Research Centre, UCL, London, 2008. Selected group exhibitions include: Changing Landscapes (BFAMI annual auction), Christie’s, London, 2010; John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 2010; Shelf, Whitstable Biennale, Kent, 2010. Simson was awarded the Clare Winsten Memorial Award in 2007.
Simson selects early Renaissance depictions of space; landscapes that provided the setting for a scene or story. She changes the format and scale, and removes all narrative elements, freeing the spaces from their historical context and translating them into a contemporary framework.
